Research description
Dr. Gottschlich’s research focuses on epidemiologic studies investigating health disparities related to cancer prevention and control. There are significant disparities associated with cervical cancer that are largely related to access to health care and health information. The focus is on the use of self-collection cervical cancer screening methods to decrease the burden of cervical cancer across diverse populations, both locally (WSU Mobile Health Units) and globally (Guatemala, Canada). Studies to date suggest that some of the highest Black-White racial disparities are associated with endometrial cancer outcomes. Current research is focusing on socio-genomic studies related to this disparity, with particular emphasis on how stress, socioeconomic status, and genomic factors relate to differential outcomes in Detroit populations. Dr. Gottsschlich and her team are also developing an epidemiologic study of lung cancer among smokers and non-smokers in Guatemala to better understand the burden and to validate an existing early detection method, as low-dose CT is not available in the region.
